Absurd formed in Germany in 1992, with Hendrik Möbus and Ronald Möbus at its center. Their music took cues from Norwegian black metal acts like Mayhem and Burzum, built on distorted guitars and raw vocals. Songs such as 'Germanien über Alles' and 'Des Wotans Schwarzer Haufen' carried openly fascist and neo-Nazi themes, which set them apart from many of their peers in the genre.
In 1993, the band faced legal trouble over their lyrics, with members arrested and charged with inciting racial hatred. Hendrik Möbus received a prison sentence. Despite this, Absurd kept recording and performing underground, releasing albums like Facta Loquuntur in 1996 and Asgardsrei in 1999. Their lineup shifted over time, but the Möbus brothers remained constant figures.
Their later work included titles like Totenburg and Blutgericht, and tracks such as 'Pesttanz' and 'Death From The Forest' continued in their aggressive, ideological vein. The band's overt racism and anti-Semitism drew widespread condemnation, and their music has been linked to instances of real-world violence. For some within black metal, Absurd represents an extreme fringe; for others, they are a warning about how music can channel hatred.
