Abu formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, with Arnaldo Antunes, Carlinhos Brown, and Marisa Monte making up the trio. They worked through some early skepticism about their approach, which mixed samba and bossa nova with experimental electronics. Their song 'Viagem Ao Centro da Terra' became a hit in Brazil.
Their lyrics sometimes addressed political and social issues, which brought them both criticism and support. They kept performing and recording, with tracks like 'Vulcão' and 'Mar Aberto' showing their range. The collaboration 'Jardim Botânico' with Raí Freitas came later.
Abu's music had a particular atmosphere, with Antunes' writing, Brown's guitar work, and Monte's vocals creating something distinct from more straightforward Brazilian pop. Songs like 'Cais da Saudade' leaned into that mood without needing to explain it.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
