Editor's note

Adema's raw Bakersfield energy and shifting lineups

A California alternative metal band that found early success with 'Giving In' and kept evolving through lineup changes.

For a quick sense of their early sound, 'Giving In' and 'Planets' still hold up. Later tracks like 'Shattered' show how they kept working through different lineups.

Adema's self-titled 2001 debut landed at number 25 on the Billboard 200, and songs like 'Giving In' and 'The Loser' got them noticed in the alternative metal scene. That album also had 'Planets,' which became something of a haunting signature track. Their sound on those early records had a raw, energetic pull that connected with listeners.

Adema came out of Bakersfield, California in the late 1990s, with brothers Mark and Tim Chavez forming the core. They followed up their debut with 'Insomniac's Dream' in 2002, which charted even higher at number 16. Lineup changes became part of their story, with Mark Chavez remaining the constant vocalist through various configurations and albums like 'Unstable' and 'Topple the Giants.'
