Ademes Castro grew up in Mindelo, a town on the island of São Vicente in Cabo Verde. He started performing with local bands there, developing the vocal style that would later define his work. His debut album 'Fortuna' came out in 1997 and included the track 'A Promessa,' which became one of his most recognizable songs.
His music draws from traditional Cabo Verdean forms like morna and coladeira, but he's never been strictly traditional about it. The songs tend to deal with straightforward themes, love, regret, faith, as you can hear in titles like 'Eu Me Arrependo' and 'Bendito Senhor.' He writes about ordinary life without much ornament.
It didn't derail his career, but it's part of the record. He kept recording after that, putting out songs like 'Já Não Sou Quem Era' and 'Novo Vaso' that continued in the same vein, direct, melodic, rooted in where he's from.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
