Ademir Vicente de Souza was born in 1935 in São Miguel Paulista, a neighborhood in São Paulo. In the 1950s, he sang with a vocal group called Os Cariocas alongside Wilson Simonal and Jorge Ben.
He went solo in 1972 with an album called 'Canções de Vida e Amor.' The track 'Abdias Nascimento' from that record became well-known. His voice had a raw intensity, and his lyrics sometimes touched on social themes.
Some of his other songs include 'Amor' and a lengthy samba enredo from 2014. His work occasionally ran into trouble with censors during Brazil's military government.
