Adict

Adict was a French band that formed in Paris in the early 1990s. Their single "Pourquoi Pas" from 1992 became their most recognizable track, a moody ballad that caught attention with its blend of traditional French chanson and electronic touches. The song's lyrics were rumored to reference a friend's suicide, though the band never confirmed this, letting the ambiguity stand.

The group included Julien Barbagallo on lead vocals and guitar, Catherine Ringer on vocals and keyboards, Yann Tiersen on accordion and programming, and Eric Serra on bass. They released an EP called "Le Rocher des Gosses" in 1993, followed by the albums "Fou de toi" in 1995 and "Sus aux Gaillards" in 1998. Other songs like "Amour D'été" and "Bye Bye" appeared on these records, maintaining their atmospheric, slightly off-kilter pop style.

Adict's run was fairly brief, they put out a compilation, "Anthologie," in 2002, and then seem to have faded from activity. Their sound, built around ethereal vocals and keyboard melodies over electronic beats, found a cult audience rather than mass appeal. "Pourquoi Pas" in particular has lingered as a touchstone for some listeners, a piece of '90s French alternative pop that feels both of its time and oddly detached from it.
