Adriano Lima came from the Pantanal region of Brazil, specifically the town of Corumbá in Mato Grosso do Sul. Born in 1955, he grew up around the sounds and stories of rural life, which would later shape his music. He was largely self-taught as a musician.
His song 'Das Vacarias' from 1986 became his breakthrough piece. It was a ballad that captured something of the Pantanal's atmosphere and connected with listeners across Brazil. Other songs in his catalog include 'Eu Quero', 'Mundo de Ilusão', and 'Soldado de Cristo'.
Lima released albums like 'Brasil Pantaneiro' in 1991, 'Alma do Pantanal' in 1997, and 'Paraíso Perdido' in 2003. His work drew from Brazilian folk and country traditions, along with some Latin American rhythms. He collaborated with musicians including Luiz Gonzaga, Dominguinhos, and Gilberto Gil.
He was known for speaking out about preserving the Pantanal ecosystem, which sometimes brought him into conflict with commercial interests in the region. He also dealt with personal struggles including alcoholism and depression.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
