Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller have been making anxious, industrial-tinged dance music since the early 1990s.
For the vibe, start with 'Blank Eyed Nose Bleed.' If you want the catchier side of their tension, 'Plagued by fear' does it.
They came up in Detroit when that city's electronic scene was still raw and unpolished, and they never really left that zone. You can hear it in the wiry synths and deadpan vocals of a track like 'Plagued by fear', it's dance music that feels like it's watching you from the corner of the room. Their 1994 album 'Anxiety Always' even had a club hit, 'Nite Life,' but it still carried that same uneasy, detached quality.
Kuperus and Miller started Adult. in the early '90s, releasing their debut 'Resuscitation' in 1993. They kept putting out records steadily through the next decade, from 'Eros' in 1995 to 'Dispensary' in 2004, with the core duo always at the center. The sound stayed in that electro-pop and industrial lane, even as other dance music got glossier.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
