Editor's note

Aerosmith's bluesy hard rock and improbable comeback

The Boston band that nearly fell apart in the 70s, then roared back with a sober second act.

For their early swagger, listen to 'Walk This Way'. For their sober second act, 'Livin' On The Edge' tells the story.

They gave hard rock a loose, bluesy swagger on 'Toys in the Attic' and 'Rocks' in the mid-70s. When drug problems and lineup changes almost ended them, they got clean and returned with hits like 'Love In An Elevator'. Their original lineup stayed together through most of it, which is rare for a band that went through so much.

Formed in Boston in 1970, they hit their stride with mid-70s albums that defined their sound. After nearly breaking up in the late 70s, Perry and Whitford returned in 1984, leading to a comeback that lasted through the 90s and beyond.

Aerosmith formed in Boston in 1970 with Steven Tyler on vocals, Joe Perry on guitar, Tom Hamilton on bass, Joey Kramer on drums, and Brad Whitford on guitar. Their self-titled debut came out in 1973, but it was the mid-70s albums like 'Toys in the Attic' and 'Rocks' that really defined their hard rock sound with a bluesy edge.

By the late 70s, drug problems and internal conflicts nearly broke the band apart. Perry and Whitford left in 1979, but they returned in 1984 after getting sober. The reunion led to 'Done with Mirrors' in 1985, and then a string of late-80s and 90s albums that brought them back to the top of the charts. Songs like 'Love In An Elevator' and 'Livin' On The Edge' kept them on rock radio through that period.

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and kept touring and recording into the 2000s and 2010s, though their output slowed. The original lineup stayed together through most of it, which is rare for a band that went through so much.
