Afala e Case formed in 1989 as a duo between singer-songwriter Maria Afala and guitarist Luiz Carlos Case. Their songs, often with lyrics written by Afala, tended to explore relationships and personal experience. They worked in a mix of Brazilian rhythms and folk styles.
Their first album was 1990's "Abismo da Paixão," which shares its name with one of their best-known songs. Other tracks like "Outra Metade" and "Sua Falta" became part of their catalog in the following years. They released several more albums through the 1990s, including "Alegria do Amor" in 1992 and "Alma" in 1994.
Early on, their sound received some criticism for being unconventional. Afala's direct lyrics about love and heartbreak also occasionally stirred discussion. The duo dealt with the usual pressures that come with touring and attention, and Afala has spoken about facing depression and anxiety during their work together.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
