Archive material and source history
Affector formed in Finland in 1999 around guitarist Matias 'Masi' Kupiainen and drummer Mika Aramo. They were joined by vocalist Juha 'Jay' Ikala, bassist Anneke van Giersbergen, and keyboardist Janne 'JB' Parviainen. Their debut album 'Element' came out in 2001.
Ikala's lyrics often dealt with religious and moral themes, which drew some criticism. The song 'New Jerusalem' from 2004 was particularly noted in this context. The band continued working through this period.
In 2007, Anneke van Giersbergen left to focus on solo work. After a break, they brought in bassist Henna Ikola. They kept recording albums like 'Renegades' in 2009 and 'Death of a King'.
