Africando formed in 1992 around Senegalese producer Ibrahima Sylla, who brought together musicians from West Africa and Latin America. The group included vocalists like Ndiouga Dieng and Omar Pene from Senegal, along with Cuban and Colombian players. Their first album, simply called 'Africando,' came out that same year.
Their sound mixed West African rhythms with salsa and other Latin styles. The song 'Aisha, Aisha' became one of their best-known tracks. They kept recording through the 1990s and 2000s, putting out albums like 'Baloba' in 1996 and 'Mandali' in 2000.
Later releases included 'Soledad' in 2007 and 'Vodoun' in 2013. Another song, 'Colombia Mi Corazón,' reflects the Colombian influence in their music. The band's lineup changed over time, with different vocalists and musicians coming through.
