Afrikanas formed in Mozambique in the early 1980s, led by frontman José Eduardo "Xidiminguana" Mondlane. Their music blended traditional Mozambican rhythms with funk, soul, and reggae influences. The band's politically charged lyrics sometimes drew government attention in their home country.
Their song "Diz-me" became particularly well-known, along with tracks like "Scalinguindon" and "Mais Açúcar." The group featured musicians including José "Zé" Mingas on bass and José "Dehó" Cháúque on drums. They maintained a presence in African music circles for several decades.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
