Afro Celt Sound System formed in 1995 around producer Simon Emmerson, pulling together musicians like vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird, percussionist Johnny Kalsi, and kora player N'Faly Kouyaté. They started with the idea that African and Celtic rhythms shared some common ground, and built their sound from there.
Their early albums included their self-titled debut in 1996, followed by 'Volume 2: Release' in 1999 and 'Volume 3: Further in Time' in 2001. Songs like 'Beautiful Rain' and 'Amber' show how they worked traditional instruments like the kora, djembe, and Celtic harps into something that didn't quite fit existing categories.
The band kept touring anyway, building a following that appreciated what they were doing.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
