Afrobots formed in Rio de Janeiro around 2008, a collective led by vocalist Rodrigo Brandão. Their sound mixed funk, soul, samba, and rock in ways that didn't fit neatly into existing Brazilian music categories. In 2011 they released "Favela Rock," a track that became their breakout. The song's beat and lyrics about favela life connected with listeners in Brazil and eventually abroad. It gave them a platform that led to festival appearances and collaborations with artists like Seu Jorge and Aloe Blacc.
