Afrodite formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1986, built around the duo of Antônio Carlos de Souza (Bebeto) and Fernando Gomes (Madrugadinha). That album's lead track "Filme de TV" became a radio fixture and their signature song.
Their sound pulled from funk, samba, and pop, giving songs like "Quem Deve Paga" and "Fica Comigo (meu amor)" a particular Brazilian bounce. They toured outside Brazil in the early 1990s, playing shows in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. The group kept recording through the decade, putting out albums like "Me Leva pra Casa" in 1992 and "A Vida É Boa" in 1996.
Later releases included live recordings and anniversary projects, like the 2006 DVD marking twenty years and a 2016 collection for their thirtieth. Their earlier hits, especially "Filme de TV," still get played, holding a place in that era's Brazilian pop.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
