Afrogroove came together in Salvador, Bahia, drawing from the city's deep musical traditions. Their sound pulls from Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and early on they worked out their material in the Pelourinho neighborhood. Sergio Bezerra handles vocals and guitar, and the group includes rapper Marcelo D2 and DJ Renato.
Their first album was called 'Bahia Santa,' named for the track that became one of their best-known songs. Other recordings include 'Procura Por Mim' and 'Cantando a Vida.' Their lyrics often touch on social themes, from racial equality to environmental concerns.
You can hear their approach on songs like 'Energia' and 'Inspirações Quilombolas,' which blend percussive grooves with melodic hooks. The music has a direct, danceable quality, built around Bezerra's singing and the group's layered instrumentation.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
