Afroito formed in Salvador, Bahia in 2006, with Anderson Souza on vocals and guitar, Rafael Sanzio on bass, Carlos Santana on drums, Edson Souza on percussion, and Leonardo Santana on keyboards and accordion. Their music pulls from the region's traditions, mixing afrobeat, samba, and reggae into something that felt local but reached beyond it.
They put out their first album in 2009, followed by others like 'Tempo de Escolher' in 2012 and 'Raiz' in 2015. Songs like 'Perco Tudo' and 'Diga' became part of their set, with lyrics that often touched on social issues and life in Brazil's neighborhoods. In 2014, 'Perco Tudo' drew some criticism for its content, but the band stood by it as reflecting real experiences.
Afroito kept recording through the 2010s, releasing 'Perco Tudo' as an album in 2018 and 'Muito Prazer' in 2021. Their sound sometimes incorporated pop elements, which led to debates about tradition versus change, but they maintained a focus on Bahian roots and live energy.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
