Afrokings

Afrokings formed in Lisbon in 2018, started by Serginho Mendes and Djodje. Their sound pulls from Angolan heritage, though they work it into contemporary rhythms rather than sticking strictly to tradition. In 2021, they put out 'Betinho (part. Kleine Mendes),' which got attention for its Afrobeat groove and became their breakout track.

That song features Kleine Mendes on vocals, and the band's lineup includes Suku on guitar and Karlos on keyboards. They've released a few other songs since then, like 'Kizomba Love' in 2021 and 'Mama Africa' in 2022. Their music has found listeners in Europe and Africa, and they've played some festivals outside Portugal.

There was some talk about cultural appropriation when they started blending Angolan and Western styles, but they've generally kept making music without much public drama. They haven't become a huge global act, but they've built a steady following for their particular take on Afrobeat.
