After 7 formed in Houston in 1987, originally with Kevon Edmonds, Danny DeGrate, Gerald Levert, and Melvin Edmonds. They signed with Virgin Records in 1989 and released their self-titled debut album that same year. The album's lead single "Ready or Not" became a major R&B hit, spending weeks at the top of the charts and establishing the group's sound.
After Gerald Levert's death in 1996, the group went through significant changes. Kevon Edmonds and Danny DeGrate left in 1997, leaving Melvin Edmonds as the only original member. New members joined over time, including Donell Jones, Jason Edmonds, and Marc Nelson. Their music continued with songs like "'til You do Me Right" and "I Want You" maintaining their smooth vocal approach.
They kept recording and performing, with "One Night" and "All About Love" representing their later work. The group's lineup has shifted multiple times since the 1990s, but their early material remains what most listeners know them for.
