After the Burial formed in Minneapolis in 2004, with guitarists Justin Lowe and Trent Hafdahl at the core. They worked through the usual early struggles of an independent metal band, including lineup changes and the grind of self-funded touring. Their sound developed around technical guitar work and atmospheric layers, a combination that would become their calling card.
Their 2008 album 'Lost in the Static' gave them a clearer identity. The title track, along with songs like 'A Wolf Amongst Ravens,' balanced intricate melodies with heavy breakdowns in a way that connected with listeners. The album's reception helped them move past being just another local act.
They've had their share of internal shifts. Vocalist Anthony Notarmaso left in 2010, replaced by Nick Wellner. Later, founding guitarist Trent Hafdahl departed after the 'In Dreams' album. Through it all, they kept releasing music, putting out records like 'Wolves Within' and 'Evergreen' that continued to refine their approach without drastically reinventing it.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
