Agalloch formed in Portland, Oregon in 1995, with John Haughm, Don Anderson, Jason Walton, and Shane Breyer as founding members. Their music drew from the Pacific Northwest's landscapes, creating atmospheric black metal that incorporated folk and ambient elements. Their debut album 'Pale Folklore' arrived in 1999, establishing their approach to the genre.
Over the next decade, they released albums like 'The Mantle' in 2002 and 'Ashes Against the Grain' in 2006. Songs such as 'Falling Snow' and 'And The Great Cold Death Of The Earth' reflect their blend of hypnotic guitar work and ethereal vocals. Shane Breyer left the band in 2006, but the group continued with Haughm, Anderson, and Walton as core members, later joined by drummer Aesop Dekker.
Agalloch disbanded in 2016 after releasing their final album 'Marrow of the Spirit' in 2010. Their catalog includes tracks like 'Our Fortress Is Burning... II - Bloodbirds' and 'Sowilo Rune', which maintain a following among listeners drawn to their particular strain of atmospheric metal.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
