Agua Marina formed in the coastal town of Sechura, where brothers Pepe and José Quiroga started playing music together. They began as a band called Los Bambinos de Oro in 1976 before eventually becoming Agua Marina. The group's 1995 album 'Ni Perdón Ni Olvido' brought them national attention in Peru, with the title track becoming particularly well-known.
Their music works within Peruvian cumbia traditions, with Pepe and José Quiroga handling lead vocals and guitar or bass. Other members like Edwin Vásquez on accordion and Carlos Sifuentes on güiro help shape their sound. Songs like 'Basta Ya Mi Amor' and 'Amor Prohibido' show their approach to romantic themes within the cumbia format.
Over time they've recorded numerous albums and occasionally worked with other Peruvian artists, though they've largely maintained their core approach. The band continues with the Quiroga brothers at its center, playing the kind of music that first connected with listeners back in the mid-1990s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
