Aguavá

Aguavá formed in 1985 in Manzanillo, Mexico, with Juan Carlos Porras on vocals and guitar, José Luis Pardo on vocals and bass, and José de Jesús Mendoza on drums. They worked with Mexican folk traditions, though their early material didn't travel far beyond the country.

In 1996, they released "Lavandera Chaguanca," a song that mixed folk melodies with tropical rhythms. It became a hit in Mexico and gained some international attention, though it also drew accusations of borrowing from traditional material. Other songs like "Al Nordeste" and "Canto Arena" followed a similar path.

They kept playing and recording into the 2000s, with tracks like "Chayita Del Viladero" and "De Una Baguala Dormida" showing their continued interest in regional forms. The group's sound stayed rooted in those coastal traditions, even as their lineup and circumstances shifted over time.
