Ahab formed in Hamburg in 2004 with Daniel Droste on vocals and guitar, Christian Hector on drums, and Stephan Wandernoth on bass. Their first album, 'The Call of the Wretched Sea,' came out in 2006 and set the tone for what they'd become known for: slow, heavy doom metal that often draws from maritime literature.
They've put out five albums, including 'The Giant' in 2008 and 'The Coral Tombs' in 2019. The title track 'The Giant' runs over twenty minutes and takes its cues from Herman Melville's 'Moby-Dick,' telling a story about a ship meeting a huge sea creature. Other songs like 'Below The Sun' and 'Further South' follow similar paths of long, atmospheric compositions.
Some listeners find their music too somber or slow, but Ahab has mostly stuck with that approach. The lineup has included Cornelius Althammer on bass alongside the original members at different points. They're still based in Germany and continue to work within the doom metal scene.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
