Editor's note

Ahn Ye Eun and her quiet, modern folk songs

A Korean singer-songwriter whose work feels both traditional and quietly contemporary.

If you're new to her work, 'Magic Lily' is a good place to start. It has that clear, unadorned feel that runs through most of her catalog.

Her songs like 'Magic Lily' and 'Sailing' have a gentle, unhurried quality that stands apart from a lot of modern pop. They often feel like short stories set to music, built around simple guitar or piano lines. There's a directness in her writing that makes even a song like 'CHANGGWI' feel personal and close.

The available songs suggest a consistent focus on acoustic, folk-leaning arrangements. From 'Line' to 'Sang Sa Hwa', the sound stays intimate and voice-forward.

Ahn Ye Eun is a Korean musician who plays the changgwi, a traditional percussion instrument. She started learning it at age seven and first appeared professionally in 2009 with the Ahn Ye Eun Trio. Her solo debut came in 2012 with an album simply titled 'Ahn Ye Eun.'

Her song 'CHANGGWI' became a breakout hit, built around the instrument she plays. Other tracks like 'Magic Lily' and 'Sailing' show her range, blending traditional Korean rhythms with contemporary pop. She released a second album called 'The Way' in 2017, which included collaborations with artists like Punchnello and Dynamic Duo.

In 2014, her performance at a concert in Japan drew criticism from some who felt her inclusion of Japanese elements was inappropriate. Ahn Ye Eun defended the choice as part of cultural exchange. She has since put out more albums, including 'Ondine' in 2019 and 'Freesia' in 2021.
