Aisling formed in Ireland as a collaboration between three musicians: vocalist and harpist Róisín O'Connor, violinist and keyboardist Séamus Begley, and guitarist and bodhrán player Dónal Lunny. They worked with Celtic tradition but brought in modern instrumentation, which drew some criticism from traditionalists early on.
Their song "Bora" became particularly well-known, and they also recorded tracks like "Crushing The Wall Of Time" and "Duan Amhairghine (Amergin's Challenge)." They released albums including Celtic Wings in 1996, Journey of the Heart in 1998, and The River in 2004.
They performed at venues like Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. The band's lineup stayed consistent with those three core members.
