A Japanese idol group built on daily theater shows and handshake events since 2005.
For the full experience, listen to 'Heavy Rotation' and then something like 'Flying Get', that's the sound of the machine running at full speed. The theater's overture is probably playing right now.
AKB48 changed what an idol group could be by making performances something you could actually attend regularly, not just watch on TV. Their 2010 hit 'Heavy Rotation' broke them into the mainstream, but the concept was always about that theater in Akihabara. Songs like 'Flying Get' kept the energy high while the lineup kept shifting, which was part of the point.
They started in 2005 with shows at their own theater in Tokyo's Akihabara district. The debut single 'Sakura no Hanabira' arrived in 2006, and by 2010 'Heavy Rotation' had become their breakout. Since then, dozens of singles have followed while members graduate or move to sister groups, but the theater shows never stopped.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
