The group's name comes from the phrase "Akontra del viento y la marea," which translates to "against the wind and the tide." They started making music that drew from their experiences in marginalized neighborhoods.
Their debut album "La Revolución" came out in 1999, followed by records like "Los Rebeldes" in 2002 and "El Sondio del Barrio" in 2006. Songs like "Mis colegialas" and "Es Mi Gusto" show their style, which mixes hip-hop with Puerto Rican rhythms and direct lyrics about social issues. Some of their material faced radio bans due to its content.
They've worked with other artists including Calle 13, Rubén Blades, and Manu Chao. The group has also been involved in community work through the Akwid Foundation, which runs programs for youth in Puerto Rico.
