Al-Neg

Al-Neg formed in Diadema, São Paulo in the late 1980s, a Brazilian hardcore band with Tadeu Jungle on vocals. Their sound drew from American hardcore like Black Flag and Minor Threat, but spoke directly to local conditions. They put out their self-titled debut in 1989, followed by 'Ordem e Progresso' in 1991.

Their lyrics addressed social and political issues, which sometimes led to police intervention at shows and radio bans. The band kept recording through the mid-90s with albums like 'Holocausto em São Paulo' and 'Pós-Moderno'. Their lineup included guitarists Luiz Antônio Messias and Pedro Leite, bassist Marcelo dos Santos, and drummer Daniel 'Presunto'.

For a certain generation of Brazilian youth, Al-Neg's concerts became gathering points. The music wasn't just aggressive noise; it gave voice to frustrations about poverty, police actions, and inequality. They stopped releasing new material after the 1997 compilation '1987 - 1997', leaving behind a handful of records that documented a specific time and place.
