Albert Kaleikini was born in 1929 in Lāhainā, Maui. He started playing music early, influenced by his father's ukulele playing and the traditional Hawaiian songs around him. As a young man, he performed with a local group called the Maui Serenaders before going solo in 1961 with his debut album 'The Hawaiian Style of Albert Kaleikini.'
His music stayed close to Hawaiian traditions, using instruments like the ukulele and slack-key guitar. In 1975, he released 'Lāhainā Luna,' whose title track became his best-known song. It's a nostalgic piece about his hometown that many consider his signature work.
Kaleikini kept performing and recording through the years, touring and putting out albums like 'Songs of Old Maui' and 'Aloha to My Friends.' In 1995, he was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame.
