Albert Van Leuven was born in 1910 and wrote songs about his hometown of The Hague. His best-known track is "Den Haag," which he wrote in 1940. It became something of an anthem for the city.
During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, he reportedly refused to perform for German authorities. After the war, he sometimes drew attention for speaking out on social and political matters.
In the 1960s, he formed The Albert Van Leuven Band and performed with them around the Netherlands. He recorded other songs like "Boven de stad" and "Leven en dood," but "Den Haag" remained the one people remembered.
