Alberto Cortez was born José Alberto García Gallo in Rancul, Argentina in 1940. He moved to Europe in 1960, spending time in Paris before settling in Madrid where he developed his songwriting. His 1965 song 'Como El Primer Dia' became a breakthrough hit across Latin America and Spain.
He recorded over thirty albums, with songs like 'Manolo' and 'Cuando Un Amigo Se Va' exploring themes of friendship, nostalgia, and everyday life. This earned him the nickname 'El Cantor de las Cosas Simples' - the singer of simple things.
Cortez performed primarily as a solo artist but collaborated with musicians including Mercedes Sosa and Joan Manuel Serrat. His work spanned folk, pop, and bolero styles, with his songs being translated into multiple languages and covered by other artists.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
