Alberto Nepomuceno was born in Fortaleza, Ceará in 1864. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris before returning to Brazil, where he became involved in efforts to develop a national musical identity. Some critics at the time felt his work was too European, while others appreciated what he was trying to do.
His piece 'Coração Triste' started as a piano composition and later became a familiar melody in Brazilian popular music. Other works include 'A Jangada' and the 'Trovas' series. He also wrote a symphony and chamber music like the 'Trio em Mi bemol' from 1888.
Nepomuceno was known to speak about social and political issues, which sometimes put him at odds with certain circles. He kept composing through various reactions to his work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
