Alcides formed in 1983 in the San Francisco Solano neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The band was led by vocalist Alex Batista, with Alejandro "Pajarito" Gómez on bandoneon, Daniel "Cholo" Amaya on drums, Cristian "Moncho" López on bass, and Guillermo "Willy" Rojas on keyboards.
Their 1997 song "La Cosquillita" became a hit, though its suggestive lyrics drew criticism from some quarters.
Alcides released several albums including "Te Amo Tanto" in 1998, "Dame Dame" in 1999, and "Esta Noche" in 2000. Their sound incorporated elements of salsa, cumbia, and pop while staying rooted in the cuarteto rhythm.
