Aleah Stanbridge began writing songs in 2006, often with just an acoustic guitar. Her early material had a folk feel, but there was something more atmospheric in it too. The band Aleah released their debut EP 'The Way Down' in 2008, which included the track 'Water and Wine'.
Her voice had an ethereal quality that drew comparisons to singers like Björk and Kate Bush. The songs dealt with heavy themes, love, loss, addiction, in a direct way that felt personal rather than abstract. Tracks like 'Vapour' and 'Breathe' from later work carried that same intimate weight.
In 2013, Stanbridge was diagnosed with a serious illness, which led the band to cancel a tour and pause their activity. The music they made before that pause remains, quiet and specific, anchored by her voice and those straightforward lyrics.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
