Alejandro Escovedo was born in Austin, Texas in 1951. His father Pete was an accordionist, and Alejandro grew up hearing Mexican conjunto music at his father's gigs. In the 1970s, he co-founded the punk band the Nuns with his brother Javier. The band had a short run but developed a cult following.
Escovedo's solo career began with his 1992 debut album 'Gravity.' He followed it with records like 'Real Animal' in 1996 and 'A Man Under the Influence' in 2001. Songs like 'Always A Friend' and 'Ashes Of Love' show his way with straightforward, personal writing. In 2003 he was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and he had a liver transplant ten years later.
He kept recording and performing after his health troubles. His catalog includes songs such as 'Anything You Want,' 'Arizona,' and 'Beautiful Lies.'
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
