Aleka's Attic formed in New York City in 1994 around singer-songwriter Aleka Primos, with bassist Ryan Foley and drummer Jake Wark. They put out a few records in the late '90s and early 2000s, including 'Medicine' in 1997 and 'Slow Motion' in 2000. Their sound had a quiet, inward quality that didn't quite fit the mainstream at the time.
Songs like 'In the corner Dunce' and 'Until Now' show what they were doing, lyrics that felt personal and exposed, delivered with a kind of hushed intensity. They built a following through word-of-mouth and smaller shows rather than radio play or big tours.
After 'Sugar Plum' in 2004, things got quiet. The band's catalog, especially those early albums, still turns up for listeners who find their way to that particular corner of '90s indie music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
