Algebra Suicide formed in San Francisco in 1991 around vocalist and guitarist Ethan Port, with bassist James Scarpellini and drummer Patrick Carney. They released three albums in the 1990s, including 'Indeterminate Forms' in 1992 and 'A Proverbial Explanation For Why No Action Is Taken' in 1995. That album title came from a line in Samuel Beckett's play 'Waiting for Godot,' which drew some attention at the time.
Their music was hard to pin down, mixing alternative rock with post-punk and experimental touches. Songs like 'Little Dead Body Poem (Little Dead Bodies)' and 'Seasonal Zombies' had a haunted, introspective quality. The band went through lineup changes and eventually disbanded in 2001.
Ethan Port died in 2008 from an accidental drug overdose. The band's small catalog, with its bleak themes and uneasy melodies, still finds listeners who connect with its particular mood.
