Allison Gray formed in Los Angeles around 2006 with Alison Sudol on vocals and guitar, Jeremy Wasser on bass and vocals, and Matthew Burhenn on drums. Their debut single "Off My Mind" got some attention with its atmospheric sound and ethereal vocals, leading to their first album Shadow of the Sun in 2007.
They followed with Black Forest in 2010, which had a darker, more experimental feel, and then The War is Over in 2012, which shifted toward a more upbeat tone. Their 2014 album Boo returned to more introspective territory. In 2011, Sudol left to pursue solo work, but the band continued with the remaining members.
