Almendra formed in Buenos Aires in the mid-1960s with Emilio Del Guercio on bass, Edelmiro Molinari on guitar, Luis Alberto Spinetta handling vocals and guitar, and Rodolfo García on drums. They took their name from Argentine guitarist Manolo Gabreski. Their first album came out in 1969, simply called 'Almendra,' which included songs like 'Muchacha (Ojos de Papel)' and 'El Tema de Pototo.'
That debut record established them in Argentina's rock scene. They put out three more studio albums over the next few years: 'Almendra II' in 1970, 'El Valle Interior' in 1971, and 'Huayra Muyo' in 1974. Keyboardist Claudio Gabis and percussionist Rodolfo Alchourrón played on some of those recordings.
The band broke up in 1973. They played together again at times later on, and in 2009 they released a new album called 'Un Viaje Interior.' Some of their songs, like 'El Diccionario' from their top tracks list, drew criticism at the time for lyrics about drugs and sexuality.
