Alta Cumbia started in Mexico in 1997, a band built around the lively rhythms of cumbia. Their breakout single "A Bailar Mi Cumbia" became a hit, helping them gain attention both at home and abroad. They released albums like "Cumbia Caliente" in 1998 and "Cumbia del Corazón" in 2000, mixing in salsa and tropical sounds along the way.
In their early years, some traditional cumbia purists pushed back against their genre-blending approach. The band kept going, though, and songs like "La Colorada" and "Y Estas Enamoradita" became staples in their setlists. Their lineup has included founder Frank Velázquez on lead vocals, along with musicians like Pedro "El Trombón" Márquez on trombone and Jesús "El Flaco" Vázquez on keyboards.
In 2007, Velázquez faced sexual harassment accusations from a former band member, which put a strain on the group's reputation for a while. They kept performing after that, and their music has been part of the broader cumbia resurgence in Latin music over the last couple decades.
