Alta Estação formed in São Paulo in 1982 with Marcelo Nova on vocals, Guilherme Arantes on keyboards, Paulo Ricardo on vocals, João Barone on drums, and Renato Russo on bass. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year and included the track 'Vida Em Jogo.'
They drew from a mix of pop, rock, and Brazilian popular music, with influences ranging from the Beatles to Chico Buarque. Their lyrics often touched on social commentary alongside more personal themes.
By 1988, Paulo Ricardo and Renato Russo had left to work on solo projects. The band continued for a while after that, but the lineup changes marked a turning point.
