Aluísio Casagrande grew up in the countryside of Rio Grande do Sul, where he learned guitar from his father's folk music background. He put out his first album, simply called 'Casagrande,' in 1994. The record caught some attention for how it mixed regional sounds with more current approaches.
His 2002 album 'João Navalha' became his most recognized work. The title track, a ballad about the legendary bandit, connected with listeners across Brazil. That song and others on the album dealt plainly with poverty and personal hardship.
In 2009, Casagrande was diagnosed with larynx cancer and had surgery that affected his voice. He's also been known for his political views, including support for the Workers' Party and a friendship with former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
