Alus formed in Melbourne in the late 2000s, with the Burtch brothers Aaron and Ryan on vocals and guitar. They were joined by Dave Naylor on drums and Jonathon Nott on bass. Their name comes from the Latin word for wings, which felt fitting for a band starting out.
Their debut single 'Better' came out in 2010 and got them some attention. They followed it with an album called By Our Design the next year. Later records included As Cities Burn in 2014, Visions in 2017, and Echoes in 2020.
Other songs like 'No No,' 'Reign,' 'Scissors,' and 'Touch Me' show the kind of moody, guitar-driven sound they settled into. They had some legal trouble with a former member around 2012, and their music sometimes drew criticism for being too dark.
