His 2002 debut album 'Preto e Branco' brought him wider attention. The title track, which reflected on racial identity, became his most recognizable song. It blended samba, reggae, and pop elements.
In 2004, some listeners criticized his use of the word 'preto' in his lyrics. Serrão said he was using it as a deliberate provocation to address racial prejudice in Brazil. He continued releasing albums like 'Segundo' in 2005 and 'O Samba É Meu Dom' in 2007.
