Arctic Monkeys started in Sheffield in 2002, with Alex Turner on vocals and guitar, Jamie Cook on guitar, Matt Helders on drums, and Nick O'Malley joining on bass in 2006. Early songs like 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' captured a raw, energetic indie rock sound that felt specific to their northern English roots.

Over the next few albums, their sound shifted away from that initial pace. 'Humbug' in 2009 introduced darker, more psychedelic tones, and by 2013's 'AM,' they'd leaned into a slower, bluesier groove with tracks like 'Do I Wanna Know?' and 'R U Mine?' The band's later work, including 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino' in 2018, moved further into loungey, piano-driven territory, which surprised some fans expecting more rock anthems.

Turner's lyrics have always been a focal point, weaving sharp observations about nightlife, relationships, and modern anxieties. The band faced some criticism in the early 2000s for being associated with the 'indie sleaze' scene, and Turner's occasional blunt interviews or lyrical themes sometimes drew media attention, but they largely avoided major scandals. They've kept recording and touring, putting out 'The Car' in 2022, without much fuss about legacy or influence.
