Amatribo formed in São Paulo in 1994 with vocalist Paulinho Moska, guitarist Fábio Sampaio, bassist Fernando Nunes, and drummer Marcelo Costa. Their music mixed rock and samba in ways that didn't fit neatly into categories, with Moska's lyrics often touching on social and political themes.
Their 2001 album 'Dia de Treinamento' drew criticism for its portrayal of urban violence and police brutality, with some accusing the band of glorifying crime. Moska defended the work as reflecting Brazilian realities. The title track became something of a cult favorite.
Later albums like 'Dinossauros e Mofo' (2003), 'Amatribo' (2006), and 'Claro Pra Mim' (2013) found critical recognition and a dedicated following. The original lineup didn't last, Sampaio, Nunes, and Costa eventually left the band.
