American Diary

American Diary formed in 1984 with Jamie O'Neal, Don Cook, and Susannah Melvoin. They put out a debut album called 'Promise of a New Day' that year, though it didn't immediately catch fire. The band kept touring and writing, and songs like 'Heart Attack Pact' and 'Life Without Living' started to find listeners who connected with their sound.

Things changed when they wrote 'Dirty Dancing' for the 1987 film. The song became a hit, tying the band's name to the movie for good. It gave them a much wider audience, but they kept making their own music, too. You can hear it in tracks like 'I Love You I Like You' and 'Liberationtoxication' from later albums.

After 'Dirty Dancing,' American Diary released more records, including one called 'Long Time Coming.' They never became a constant chart presence, but they maintained a steady output and a core group of fans who appreciated what they did.
