Archive material and source history
American Flyer formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s with Steve DeGraw on vocals and guitar, Gary Phillips on bass, and Jimmy King on drums. Their debut album 'Let Me Down Easy' came out in 1976 and found some commercial success, giving the band a national profile.
After that initial attention, Phillips left the band over creative differences. DeGraw later dealt with substance abuse issues in the early 1980s before getting sober in 1984.
American Flyer regrouped with Phillips back in the lineup and released 'Twice the Love' in 1987. They continued playing and recording through the 1990s and 2000s.
